I'm using a PC (Windows or Linux). How do I connect a barcode scanner to my computer?

Most scanners come with either a keybord wedge (a Y-shaped cable that connects the scanner, the keyboard and the computer) or USB. In both cases the scanner pretends to act like a keyboard. This means that everything you scan is sent to the computer as if entered on the keyboard. With modern computers / operating systems dedicated software or drivers are not required.

However, keyboard wedges will not work with most laptops because modern laptops don't have keyboard ports anymore (sometimes dubbed "legacy free"). In this case (as is with Macs) USB is the only option.

Recently barcode scanners with built-in Bluetooth for wireless connection have been introduced. Make sure that the device comes with the appropriate drivers and works in your environment.
